Happy Thanksgiving
Importance of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving in America is an important national holiday, and this fun-filled day is celebrated in America every fourth Thursday in November.
On Thanksgiving, Americans gather with family and friends for dinner, displaying their culinary skills using traditional turkey vegetables and other treats. But why do Americans celebrate Thanksgiving?
What is Thanksgiving?
In November, just a couple of weeks before Christmas, Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States and Canada that celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. On Thanksgiving, people gather for a day of feasting with family, friends, and relatives.
Why do Americans Celebrate Thanksgiving?
To find the answer to this question, you've got to trace the holiday back far beyond 1939 when President Franklin D Roosevelt got the approval of Congress to make Thanksgiving a national holiday.
In the year 1620, Protestants, known today as pilgrims, arrived in the new world on board the ship called Mayflower and settled in Massachusetts. Their first winter in America was full of difficulties. They arrived too late to farm the land, so they starved. Half of the colony died from disease and starvation.
The local Native American tribe showed them how to grow corn, hunt, and fish. In the fall of 1621, the pilgrims got a rich harvest. In honor of their good fortune, they planned a meal to celebrate and give thanks for the abundance of food. On the first Thanksgiving prior to dining, they all praised the Lord. This is how Thanksgiving got started.
Beliefs of Thanksgiving
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving for a variety of reasons, including religious and moral ones. The American church describes the purpose of celebrating Thanksgiving to express gratitude to a devoted god who guided the English settlers known as the Pilgrims through their tough trip. The church also celebrates it supposedly as a sign of reference to God thanking him for his faithfulness and goodness.
Thanksgiving conveys a feeling of cultural and societal togetherness. It's a day that's ideal for spending time with friends and family and giving thanks for all that we have. Thanksgiving serves as a gentle reminder that life offers more joy than sorrow.
