Doshas Pt. 3: Pitta

In the past weeks, we covered the concepts of Ayurvedic body constitutions Vata and Kapha. Today in the final post of this blog series, we’ll talk about Pittas.

When in balance and good health, Pitta are warm, energetic, joyous, creative, and enterprising. Out of balance, Pittas are resentful, impatient, and aggressive.

Due to their main element being Fire, as opposed to Kapha and Vata, Pitta needs cooling rather than warming foods and environment. However, meditation and other relaxing and grounding activities are also important, to help control the element.

 

APPLY COOLING HERBS

Henna has cooling properties for both hair and skin, akin to aloe vera. This is why Henna products are perfect for Pitta, as they are cooling for the scalp. Henna products such as Classic Henna or 30 Minute Henna can be used to dye hair, or simply the Henna-enriched product, such as the Oil for Dry and Damaged Hair and Skin, which also contains tea tree oil for additional healing and cooling properties.

EAT COOLING FOODS

Perfect foods for a Pitta are cool watery fruit and vegetables such as melon and cucumber, as well as dairy – especially yogurt, for the beneficial properties on your gut health.

Hotter spices such as ginger, cumin, black pepper, fenugreek, clove, salt, and mustard seed should be used sparingly. Very hot seasonings such as chili peppers, and cayenne are best avoided. Instead, your pantry should include coriander, cilantro, cardamom, saffron, and fennel.

A sure way that to help a Pitta balance their Fire element is taking in the beauty of nature. Go on a breathtaking hike, or take a walk to watch sunrise or the moon – choose your best way to ground and unwind.

According to Business Insider, multiple scientific studies show that spending time in nature helps reduce stress and improve concentration, reduce inflammation, and even help prevent risk of early death. Time in nature will fulfill the Pitta’s need for beauty and a peaceful, meditative setting.
